Box Score 2 SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--Host Western New England University rapped 25 hits and got strong pitching performances from senior
Mike Lospinuso and junior
Brendan Nugent to sweep Roger Williams University in a Commonwealth Coast Conference baseball doubleheader at Pat Ricci Field at Trelease Park on Sunday, 6-2 and 8-0. With the wins, the 24-8 Golden Bears maintain a share of first place in the CCC standings with Endicott at 13-1 in conference games--which swept Curry at home today. The Hawks, meanwhile, fall to 20-15 on the season and 8-6 in the league.
"I was very pleased with the outcome today," Western New England coach Matt LaBranche said. "This was the first time all season I've walked off the field feeling like we played our best from start to finish."
Lospinuso went the distance in game one to improve to 6-1, scattering six hits while allowing two unearned runs. He had six strikeouts and did not issue a walk.
Junior leadoff hitter
Jeff Schult led WNE with two hits, including a double, and three runs batted in. Sophomore
Steve Buckley also had a pair of hits.
Matt Jefferis, whose brother, Kevin, is a pitcher on the WNE squad, led RWU with a 2-for-3 showing at the plate, with a RBI.
Western New England built a 4-0 lead after two innings and never looked back. Schult highlighted the quick start with a two-run double down the left-field line in the bottom of the second.
"Buck has been working real hard to develop into the type of threat we need him to be in the clean-up spot," said LaBranche, referring to Buckley who added two more hits and a RBI in Game 2. "He stayed a little late last night working on a couple of things with Coach (Dan) Gomez. We saw some good results today."
In the nightcap, Nugent also upped his record to 6-1 after combining for a shutout with senior
Kevin Jefferis. Nugent allowed five singles and did not surrender a walk before giving way to Jefferis, who had a perfect 1-2-3 seventh to close it out.
"I have to also be pleased with the pitching staff. We pounded the (strike) zone today. Both starters were excellent," LaBranche stated.
Junior
Steve Ambrosino and senior
Kyle McKelvey paced the Golden Bears' 14-hit attack by recording three apiece, with Ambrosino driving home three runs and McKelvey knocking in one.
