Box Score BRIDGEWATER, Mass.--Seniors
Tim Clark and
Kyle McKelvey each had two hits for Western New England, but host Bridgewater State scored six times in the third inning en route to an 8-3 non-conference baseball victory on Friday at Alumni Park. The Bears improve to 18-12-1 on the season, while the visiting Golden Bears drop to 25-9.
Western New England took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning when senior
Taylor Perun doubled down the left field line to bring home sophomore
Steve Buckley from second base, who had led off with an infield single. In fact, the Golden Bears were primed to have a big inning as the first three hitters reached via a base hit, but BSU winning pitcher David Holmes (3-0) escaped the jam by getting three consecutive outs.
Trailing 1-0, the Bears exploded for six runs in the bottom of the third as they sent 11 batters to the plate. David Pierce started the scoring as he ripped a bases-loaded, two-run single. Sean Riley made it a 3-1 score one batter later on an RBI ground out, and Trevor Lawson followed with an RBI single scoring Pierce from third. After a walk to Keane Costa, Lawson would come around to score two batters later on Deleo's run scoring single. A Western New England error would account for the final run of the inning.
The Golden Bears were able to cut the deficit to 6-3 in the top of the fifth on a bases loaded, two-run double off the bat of senior
Mike Rubino. Holmes, however, kept WNE off the board the rest of the way as he retired 13 of the last 15 batters he faced.
Pierce led BSU offensively with three hits and three RBI, while Tory Buck and Lawson both added two hits apiece. Lawson also had two RBI.
"This was a very disappointing effort, especially at this time of year," Western New England coach Matt LaBranche said. "We had a second and third with nobody out in the second inning that we couldn't execute. That could have been a spot where we jumped out to a three-run lead (instead of scoring once. Then we gave up five runs almost exclusively because we couldn't field two different sacrifice bunts.
"We got what we deserved today."
