Box Score
BABSON PARK, Mass.--Senior co-captain
Tim Clark led Western New England's 12-hit attack with three singles, and junior
Jeff Schult and sophomore
Steve Buckley added two apiece, to help the Golden Bears to a 6-3 non-conference baseball victory at Babson at Govoni Field on Monday to wrap up the regular-season.
Sophomore Dillon Gonzalez had two hits and scored once while senior Conor Kortmann had a pair of hits and drove in a run for the Beavers (22-16 overall).
The visitors jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the third inning as Western New England (28-9) strung together five hits in a row. Schult smoked a one-out double to left center field and Clark singled down the left field line to put the Golden Bears up 1-0. Senior
Mike Rubino and Buckley followed with singles to load the bases before senior
Kyle McKelvey drove home a pair of runs with a double to center. Senior
Taylor Perun capped the rally with a sacrifice fly to plate Buckley.
Sophomore starting pitcher
Trevor Breton retired all 12 Beavers he faced, including seven via the strikeout, before he left the game in the fifth inning to rest as top-seeded Western New England begins the 2013 Commonwealth Coast Conference Championship Tournament on Thursday. Freshman
Tom Mahoney, the first reliever, earned the win to improve to 4-1 after allowing two runs on three hits in 2-1/3 innings.
"This is was a good way to end the regular season, because it was a solid win against a quality opponent," said Western New England coach Matt LaBranche. "We threw a bunch of guys to get pitchers lined up for the tourney. Trevor and Nick, in particular, were excellent.
"We are still experimenting in right (field) with (senior co-captain Matt) Anthonis out with an injury, and (junior Steve) Ambrosino was a pleasant surprise out there," he said. "He looked real comfortable, so we can feel real confident with him in that position instead of first base."
Babson's first-year starter Nick Ahearn settled down to retire 11 straight WNE batters before freshmen
T.J. Wyrebek and
Tim Budd started the top of the seventh inning with back-to-back singles. The Golden Bears would load the bases but scored only once to extend their lead to 5-0 as Beavers' freshman reliever Hunter Silva induced a double-play and then closed the inning with a strikeout, leaving Rubino stranded at third base.
Senior John Botelho got Babson's first hit of the day in the bottom of the sixth inning and the Beavers got on the board in the bottom of the seventh with a pair of runs. Gonzalez led off with a single through the right side and senior Trevor Boyce was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. Gonzalez advanced to third on a fly out to right and scored one batter later on a single by Kortmann. Sophomore Sean MacPhee followed with a single through the left side to plate Boyce, cutting the deficit to 5-2.
However, WNE's last two pitchers of the day sophomore
Nick Salerno and senior
Kevin Jefferis combined for four strikeouts and allowed only a run over 2-2/3 innings to shut the door on Babson.
"We got three more hits from
Tim Clark today, and that's big as he has proven that he can carry a team when he gets going," LaBranche said."
