Matt Anthonis Goes 4-for-5 with 3 RBI as 'Bears Triple Up on UMass-Boston, 9-3

Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--Senior co-captain Matt Anthonis went 4-for-5 with three runs batted in and junior Jeff Schult added two extra-base hits to power Western New England's 14-hit attack during a 9-3 victory over visiting UMass-Boston in non-conference baseball action at Trelease Memorial Park on Wednesday. The Golden Bears have won a season-high five straight games to improve to 11-5 overall, while the Beacons now stand at 6-8 on the season.

Senior Tom Booth also enjoyed a multi-hit afternoon with two singles and a double. Booth singled home a run in the bottom of the fourth inning to give WNE an 8-1 lead at the time.

Junior Brendan Nugent pitched seven innings to earn his third win in four decisions, scattering seven hits and allowing one run.

Jamill Moquette had two of the Beacons' nine hits. The visitors scored their three runs on two sacrifice flies and a wild pitch.

UMass-Boston threatened in the opening frame when Nick Brothers and Moquette led off the game with back-to-back singles. Nugent, however, escaped the jam unscathed by getting the next batter, Matt Consiglio, to ground into a double play and then he struck out cleanup hitter Todd Ezold looking.

In its half inning, Western New England took a 1-0 lead on fielder's choice by sophomore Steve Buckley with the bases loaded, driving home Schult who led off with a double.

The Beacons responded with a run of their own in the second until the Golden Bears reclaimed the lead for good with three runs in the bottom half. Anthonis sparked the rally with a two-run triple to right-center field and senior Mike Rubino followed with a RBI-single.

Western New England tacked on another run in the third inning and then put the game away with three more in the fourth.

Sophomore Jason Haddy, WNE's third pitcher of the game, struck out the UMB side in a scoreless ninth to close it out.

"It was nice to see us put up a couple of crooked numbers today, which is more typical of how we like to pressure teams offensively," Western New England coach Matt LaBranche said. "We filled up the bases every inning. We still aren't executing great in RBI spots but we are showing definite signs of improvement."
