BEVERLY, Mass.--The Western New England baseball team scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning and tacked on two more in the next frame to earn a come-from-behind 6-4 victory in extra innings over Endicott on Sunday, salvaging a split in a Commonwealth Coast Conference doubleheader at North Field. In the first game, the host Gulls shut down the Golden Bears 6-0.
Western New England now stands at 14-6 overall and 5-1 in the CCC, seeing its 13-conference win streak snapped and getting blanked in a CCC game for the first time since April 4, 2009, by Wentworth, 3-0. Endicott is 13-9 and 5-1 to share first-place in the conference with the Golden Bears.
After spotting Endicott a 4-0 lead after four innings, Western New England stormed back with four runs to force more baseball. Senior co-captain
Tim Clark had a key two-run, ground-rule double to left field, and freshman
T.J. Wyrebek concluded the comeback with a RBI-groundout. Junior
Steve Ambrosino started the scoring with a RBI-single through the right side.
Then with one out in the eighth, the Golden Bears loaded the bases on a single, walk and fielding error. Ambrosino, the fifth batter in the inning, singled to shortstop to force senior
Mike Rubino from third base with the go-ahead run. Senior
Kyle McKelvey, the next hitter, grounded out to third to bring home an insurance run.
Western New England junior
Brendan Nugent pitched a perfect eighth against the Gulls to notch the save. Senior
Kevin Jefferis gave the Golden Bears a chance after falling behind early, working three innings in relief without allowing a run and giving up only a hit to earn the victory. He also had three strikeouts.
"I'm real proud of the way we came back to win this game. We struggled offensively all day but found a way in the seventh," Western New England coach Matt LaBranche said. "Timmy (Clark) delivered the big hit that we have come to expect from him, but a lot of credit has to go to Jefferis. His work out of the pen gave us a chance to claw our way back."
Rubino and Ambrosino finished with two hits apiece. Rubino scored twice.
Robert Goldstick led Endicott offensively with a 2-for-2 performance and he had three runs batted in.
In the opener, reigning two-time CCC pitcher of the week
Mike Lospinuso, a senior, carried a no-hitter until two outs in the sixth inning, when the Gulls were able to break a scoreless tie with six runs. It was Lospinuso's first loss of the season after winning his first four decisions.
Tyler Hitchcock picked up his fourth win against no losses after throwing a two-hitter. He walked three and struck out two batters.
"Lospo deserved better today. If our starting pitcher takes a no-hitter into the sixth, he should be working with a lead," added LaBranche. "(But you have to) tip your hat to Hitchcock because he worked fast and threw strikes, and we didn't touch him."
Senior
Taylor Perun and junior
Jeff Schult had WNE's two hits in the first game.
Eric Lemke was one of six Gulls who had one hit, as he drove in a pair of runs.
