WEST HARTFORD, Conn.--Freshmen
Caleigh Curran and
Joeanna Glantz combined for four points to propel the Western New England University women's tennis team to a commanding 9-0 non-conference victory Saturday over host University of Saint Joseph at the USJ Bluejays Athletic Complex. The Golden Bears improve to 3-1 while USJ falls to 1-3 on the season.
Curran won at No. 1 singles in straight sets and teamed with Glantz for a No. 1 doubles win. Glantz was also victorious at No. 3 singles without losing a game.
"I am very happy with the focus we had going into today's match," WNE coach Jennifer Kolins said. "We are looking to keep that same focus and intensity during next week's hectic match schedule (with four matches in five days)."
Freshman
Corey St. Louis also earned a 6-1, 6-0 at No. 6 singles.
Senior
Lindsey Brudvig also earned two points with wins at No. 4 singles (6-2, 6-1) and No. 3 doubles (8-2) with senior co-captain
Ashley Lauricella.
Co-captain
Linda Mustafa, a graduate student, won a No. 2 singles match in straight sets without surrendering a game and teamed up with
Kelsey Grode for an 8-3 No. 2 doubles triumph.
Kelly Byrnes improved to 2-0 at No. 4 singles (and 3-1 overall) by dispatching her opponent 6-3, 6-2.
"(USJ) Coach (Tom) Walsh recognized Kaitlynn Caits' tremendous tennis ability and the connection that Sport creates and our thoughts are with her through her courageous recovery," Kolins added, noting the pre-match moment of silence for the 2009 Great Northeast Conference Player of the Year from Suffolk University who was severely injured in the Boston Marathon bombing attacks last spring.
