Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--Oneonta State and Western New England traded second-half goals en route to a 1-1 tie in double overtime on Sunday during non-conference men's soccer action at Suprenant Field. The visiting Red Dragons' record is now 4-2-2 while the Golden Bears are 5-2-1 after playing their first overtime contest of the season.
Newcomer
Tim Murray put the home team on the scoreboard first with his second career goal in the 63rd minute. Freshman
Kory Caster sent a pass from the right wing that senior
Jake Bartnik dummied behind the ball and connected to Murray in stride, placing the shot in the lower right corner.
But 14 minutes later, Dylan Williams scored his team-leading fourth goal of the season to tie it for Oneonta by heading home Mitchell Cain's long service from the right wing and tucking the shot just inside the right post.
The Red Dragons had two golden chances from close range to get the go-ahead goal under the 10-minute mark of regulation. In the 84th minute, Zef Saljanin was denied by WNE goalie
Domenick Villano's right-leg kick save. Then in the 88th, Saljanin's header hit the right post.
Bartnik had a solid scoring opportunity of his own moments earlier, but his shot from 15 yards out went high over the crossbar in the 83rd. He had three of WNE's seven shots (one on goal) on the afternoon, with
Ryan Williams and Murray adding two apiece.
Villano was spectacular in making six saves while facing 24 Red Dragons shots. Besides getting a piece of Saljanin's shot with his leg, the senior co-captain reached up with his left hand to stop Jake Sutherland's 25-yard free kick that was headed for the upper left-hand corner of the net.
Dylan Williams led the Red Dragons with a game-high six shots--two that were on target.
Oneonta, of the State University of New York Athletic Conference, is just two years removed from appearing in the final four of the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship.
Neither team got good looks at the goal in both extra sessions, combining for three shots that were wide or high.
