Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--Senior
Jake Bartnik scored the only goal of the game in the first half and the Western New England defense did the rest in a 1-0 non-conference men's soccer victory Wednesday over visiting Wesleyan at Suprenant Field. The Golden Bears extend their unbeaten streak to four games (3-0-1) to improve to 6-2-1 overall, while the Cardinals fall to 4-2.
Western New England also picks up its first win over Wesleyan since 2010, third overall in the nine all-time meetings and first-ever over the Cardinals at home (1-2-1).
Western New England senior co-captain
Domenick Villano made five saves to earn his fourth shutout this season, while Wesleyan keeper Emmett McConnell had two stops.
After the teams traded shots that missed the target, the Cardinals put heavy pressure on the WNE defense for the next 10 minutes with five shots--two on goal. Brandon Sousa had a golden opportunity to give Wesleyan the lead in the 24th minute but his shot hit the post.
But the Golden Bears didn't break and Bartnik broke the ice with his team-leading sixth goal in the 28th minute.
Kory Caster stole the ball in the Wesleyan half of the field on the right wing and sent a cross in the middle to Bartnik, who found the back of the net. It was the freshman's second helper in as many games.
Wesleyan doubled up WNE in shots, 12-6, and held a 5-3 shots on goal margin. The Cardinals had two of the three corner kicks in the contest.
Western New England had to withstand a couple of good looks by the Cardinals in the waning minutes. Dylan Hoy twice was denied by Villano in the 84th and 85th while Sousa's blast went just wide in the 88th minute.
