Megan French's Penalty Stroke Goal with Nine Seconds Left Lifts Golden Bears' Win

Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--Senior co-captain Megan French scored the game-winning goal on a penalty stroke with 9 seconds left in regulation to lift host Western New England to a 3-2 win Saturday evening over Union College (N.Y.) in non-conference field hockey action at Golden Bear Stadium. The Golden Bears snapped a three-game losing skein to improve to 4-8 on the season while the Dutchwomen slip to 4-7.

Freshman Michelle Carlson also scored twice for the Golden Bears, who held leads of 1-0 and 2-1. But French potted the game-winner after WNE was awarded the penalty stroke because Union keeper Laura Aptowitz was issued a yellow card for committing a deliberate foul on Carlson who was taken down by Aptowitz following a saved shot. French walked up to the spot and calmly found the back of the cage in the lower-left corner to beat Danika Hornick, who had just come into the game to replace Aptowitz.

Freshman keeper Grace Trupe made her first career start a memorable one, making a personal-record 10 saves to chalk up her first collegiate win.

Union held the advantages in shots (17-12), shots on goal (12-11) and penalty corners (10-8).

Carlson put the Golden Bears on the scoreboard in the 11th minute when she collected a pass that deflected off a defender from French and then put a shot past Aptowitz who came off her line to overplay the pass.

Sarah Medd tied the score for Union in the 19th minute, following up a rebound shot by Jessie Mulvey. The teams went into the halftime break tied at 1-all.

Union had several scoring opportunities just before the intermission after WNE had a flurry of offensive chances of its own. Aptowitz stymied Carlson from close range off a penalty corner. On transition, Mulvey's pass to Allison Troy near the front of the right post just hopped over her stick. Moments later, Troy had back-to-back shots from close range that were saved by Trupe.

Carlson opened the scoring in the second frame in the 44th minute, taking advantage of a feed from sophomore Hillary Naranjo-Mejia. The Golden Bears led 2-1.

The Dutchwomen tied the contest for a second time at 2-all in the 61st minute. The scoring play began with Hannah Najar taking a penalty corner to the left of the goal, passing to Laura Pacheco at the top of the striking circle. Pacheco blasted a shot from the top of the circle that was tipped into the goal by Najar, who was standing unmarked at the left post.

Union put the pressure on for the next eight minutes, getting two shots off by Alexa Steriti and Pacheco that were blocked down by the Golden Bears defense.

Western New England is back in action on Wednesday when it travels to the state of Rhode Island to do battle with Commonwealth Coast Conference foe Salve Regina, starting at 5:30 p.m.
