Wentworth Scores Early Goal and Hangs On to Nip Western New England, 1-0

Box Score BOSTON--Western New England junior keeper Briana Kubik made 12 saves but Wentworth scored the only goal of the game in the first half and then had to hang on for the 1-0 victory over the visiting Golden Bears in Commonwealth Coast Conference women's soccer action on Saturday at Sweeney Field. The Golden Bears fall to 5-8-3 overall and below the .500-mark in the CCC for the first time at 2-3-1, while the Leopards improve to 7-6-2 (2-3-1 CCC) after their win on Homecoming/Family Weekend.

Junior Amanda Weinberger scored in the 12th minute on an assist by senior Olivia Moore. Weinberger's seventh goal of the season came when she and Moore went in on a run. Moore slid a pass to Weinberger in the box and her shot beat the WNE keeper.

Kubik notched her fifth double-digit save outing of the season, pushing her conference-leading total to 107. Her career high is 113, which she set in 2013. Junior Nicole Leahey made four saves in her second consecutive shutout for the Leopards.

Wentworth outshot the Golden Bears 21-9, including a 13-4 margin in shots on goal, and also took seven of the nine corner kicks. With three shots apiece, senior Tayler Mazurski (1 SOG) and junior Emma Norden (2 SOG) tried to generate some offense for WNE.

The Golden Bears had a chance to take an early lead when Mazurski served a corner kick that junior Erica Parlavecchio received and fired a shot that hit the crossbar. Nearly four minutes later Wentworth had a similar chance when sophomore Mary Annon sent a corner kick to the box where junior Valeria Zapata put a shot on net that Kubik stopped.

Both teams had chances throughout the first half; however, the score remained 1-0 in favor of the Leopards at the break. Wentworth held a 12-6 shot advantage through the first 45 minutes of action.

Moore had a chance in the 67th minute to make it a 2-0 game when she one-timed a shot that Kubik made a diving stop on. In the 73rd minute, WNE nearly tied it when Norden went in alone down the left side, but her shot hit the post. Norden again had a chance in the 83rd minute; however, a Leahey stop preserved the one-goal win.

Western New England is at CCC opponent Nichols in Dudley on Wednesday (4 p.m.).
