Box Score
OWINGS MILLS, Md.--No. 11 Western New England used a strong possession game in the first half to stymie the high-powered offensive attack of No. 3 Stevenson, but the Golden Bears couldn't keep that momentum going in the second of a 14-5 non-conference loss of nationally-ranked NCAA Division III men's lacrosse teams on Saturday evening at Mustang Stadium.
Visiting Western New England falls to 0-2 on the young season for the first time since 2010 while the defending national champion Mustangs improve to 2-1.
Senior
Justin McKinney led the Golden Bears with a pair of goals and an assist.
In the early going, WNE forged a 1-1 tie on
Owen Caruso's second goal of the season while outshooting the hosts 10-5.
But Stevenson outshot the Golden Bears 8-0 for the rest of the opening quarter and led 3-1 after 15 minutes on the strength of two man-up goals. Tony Rossi scored the go-ahead goal with 4 minutes and 7 seconds remaining as the Mustangs would not trail again for the rest of the contest.
Rossi came off the bench to lead all student-athletes with four goals and five points, Glen Tomkins added three goals and Chris Dashiell had three assists for Stevenson.
Joining McKinney and Caruso in the scoring column for the Golden Bears were freshman
Keegan Dudeck and senior co-captain
Sean Lawton. In addition, senior
Mike Donahue recorded an assist.
In the second quarter, Western New England scored only once--Dudeck at 13:18--but went into halftime behind only 5-2 because of slowing down its offense and getting good looks on the target while keeping the ball away from the Mustangs.
Western New England junior goalie
Brandon Body made what's believed to be a career-high 21 saves, including seven stops in the first quarter and eight more in the second. Dimitri Pecunes stopped 10 shots to earn the victory in the Mustangs' cage.
In the second half, however, Stevenson got its offense in sync and scored four times in the third, then five more goals in the fourth quarter. The Mustangs also took advantage of five WNE penalties to score four goals on the man-up.
For the contest, Stevenson also held advantages in shots (48-30), shots on goal (35-15), ground balls (34-21), face-off wins (15-8), turnovers (15-22) and caused turnovers (11-5).
Western New England returns to action next Saturday at crosstown rival Springfield College, starting at noon.
