Mike Lospinuso pitched a complete game and sophomore leadoff hitter
Scott Hubener went 2-for-5 with two runs batted in to lead an 11-hit attack, as Western New England defeated William Paterson in a RussMatt Central Florida Baseball Invitational game at Lake Myrtle Park on Wednesday. The Golden Bears has won two-straight to improve to 4-4 on the season, while the Pioneers drop to 4-3.
Lospinuso scattered seven hits and issued no walks while striking out six batters to improve to 1-1 on the season, lowering his earned-run average from 2.45 to 1.8 in the process.
With WNE leading 3-0 after five innings, Hubener sparked a three-run sixth that doubled the lead. With two outs, sophomore
Kevin Marciano doubled to advance freshman
Daniel Morin, who led off with a single, to third base. Hubener then delivered a timely two-run single through the left side, and then was sent home himself on a double by sophomore
Chris Casey.
Mike Abate led WP with two doubles and K.C. Abel also had two hits.
Besides Hubener, the Golden Bears also got two hits apiece from senior co-captain
Steve Ambrosino (1 RBI) and junior
Steve Buckley (1 RBI).
The Pioneers ruined the shutout bid in the seventh when Abel doubled to right-center field with two outs, and then scored on Brady Pevny's single to right.
Western New England will play at split-doubleheader here on Thursday, beginning with Keene State at 11:30 a.m. and followed by Trinity-Conn. at 4:30 p.m.
