Box Score 2 AUBURNDALE, Fla.--Keene State defeated Western New England, 2-1, in a pitchers' duel Thursday at the RussMatt Central Florida Baseball Invitational held at Lake Myrtle Park. The Golden Bears (4-6 overall) also fell 6-1 to Trinity-Conn. later in the day.
Western New England got fine pitching performances from senior starter
Brendan Nugent and junior relieverÂÂ
Brian Mazella. Nugent struck out eight batters against no walks while giving up two runs and eight hits over five innings, taking the loss. Mazella kept the WNE offense in it, keeping Keene off the scoreboard for the final three innings. He allowed a hit and a walk with three strikeouts.
But Owls' sophomore Cody Dube was even better, getting the complete-game win after scattering eight hits and walking one while striking out two.
The Owls broke through with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on two hits and a sacrifice fly.
Western New England cut the lead in half in the ninth when senior co-captain
Steve Ambrosino led off with a triple and scored on junior's
Steve Buckley's groundout to shortstop. But the Golden Bears couldn't scratch the potential game-tying or go-ahead run and their rally fell just shy.
Sophomore
Daniel Morin, freshman
Kyle Maglio and Ambrosino each had two hits as part of WNE's eight. The Golden Bears were able to get the leadoff man on base in three of the first four innings and five for the game, but scored only once in those situations.
Western New England wraps up the Invitational at 9:30 a.m. Friday here against nationally-ranked Wisconsin-Whitewater.
