Box Score BROCKTON, Mass.--Junior
Steve Buckley and sophomores
Scott Hubener,
T.J. Wyrebek each had two hits for Western New England, but it wasn't enough to counter some late-game heroics by host UMass.-Boston as the Golden Bears dropped a tough 8-7 non-conference baseball game on Friday at Campanelli Stadium. Western New England falls to 12-15-1 overall after seeing its five-game unbeaten streak snapped (4 wins, 1 tie), while the Beacons improve to 12-13 on the season.
Jose Pena tied the game at 7-7 with a RBI-double to right field and then he scored the go-ahead run on Kyle Szatrowski's single to right-center for the walk-off win.
Buckley led the Golden Bears as he went 2-for-4 with a run batted in and a run scored. Sophomore
T.J. Wyrebek recorded the lone extra base-hit for WNE as the second baseman went 2-for-5.
The Beacons combined for 12 hits in the victory, with Pena going 4-for-5 at the dish with the game-tying RBI and two runs scored. Anthony Searles finished 2-for-3 with a run scored and RBI. Jamill Moquete and Daniel Mantoni each had a pair of hits and combined for two RBI and three runs scored respectively.
Western New England built a 3-0 lead after 4-1/2 innings. The Golden Bears took advantage of a fielding error for the game's first run and Buckley had a RBI single to right-center field in the third inning. In the top of the fifth, sophomore
Doug Milne had a two-out RBI with a single through the right side.
After UMB tied it at three with two runs in the home fifth and another run in the sixth, WNE pushed across three runs in the seventh for a second three-run lead and 6-3 advantage. Senior co-captain
Jeff Schult had a RBI-single to right-center field, freshman
Daniel Morin had a RBI-single through the left side and junior
Matt Anziano had a sacrifice bunt to squeeze in another run.
After crawling back from a three-run deficit, the Beacons got their first runner on in the bottom of the ninth on a hit by pitch. Charles LaPaglia reached first on an error by the third baseman to put runners on first and second. Pena then crushed the ball off the right field wall sending the two runners around the bases.
Jason Cholish, who was hit by the pitch, would reach without a problem to tie the game at 7-7. As LaPaglia came around to score what would have been the game-winning run, Anziano was waiting at home plate following a perfectly executed relay. Now with two outs and Pena ready to go at second, Szatrowski ripped another deep ball to the outfield on a 1-0 count to give the Beacons the victory.
The win went to lefty reliever Harlan Zeerip following 1-1/3 innings of work. He allowed just one hit in his short appearance to earn his second win of the year. In his second straight start, Steve Roche was solid as the junior righty went six complete and allowed just three runs, one earned, on six hits. He also fanned one and walked another.
Western New England hosts Commonwealth Coast Conference opponent Eastern Nazarene at noon Saturday for a doubleheader at Trelease Park.
