Kevin Marciano Gets Four Hits to Help the Golden Bears Earn CCC Road Sweep at Gordon

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WENHAM, Mass.--Sophomore Kevin Marciano led Western New England with four hits on the day as the Golden Bears swept a Commonwealth Coast Conference baseball doubleheader at Gordon on Wednesday, taking the first game 6-5 and cruising 8-1 in the nightcap. Western New England improves to 7-7 on the season and 3-0 in the CCC with its third-straight win, while the Scots fall to 7-8 overall and 2-4 in the conference.

In the first game, Western New England built a 6-0 lead before Gordon put a scare into the Golden Bears with a five-run seventh inning. But junior reliever Brian Mazella got Cody Davey to ground out to the pitcher with the tying run on base to end the threat and preserve the victory with his first save of 2014.

Down to their last at-bats of the game, Scots' offense came alive with five runs on three walks, an error, a hitbatsman and a hit, sending nine men to the plate. Dawson Tefft drew a bases loaded walk and Alonzo Martinez then launched a ball into the right field cornerâ€"which was caughtâ€"but Jesse Amaya tagged from third base to plate the Scots' second run. Alex Smith connected to the right-center gap for a RBI-double to make it 6-3, followed by pinch-hitter Carlos Pichardo clearing the bases on a dropped fly ball to set the stage for Mazella's clutch outing.

Marciano, the No. 9 hitter in the lineup, had two hits to pace the Golden Bears offense.

Senior Brendan Nugent pitched four scoreless innings to get the win, striking out five, allowing three hits and walking three. His solid start was highlighted by striking out the final batter with a runner in scoring position in the first, second and fourth frames. In the third, the WNE defense turned an inning-ending double play to squash another threat.

Western New England led wire-to-wire in the second contest, scoring four times in the second inning to take a 5-0 lead. Senior co-captain Steve Ambrosino capped the rally with a two-run double.

The Golden Bears outhit the Scots 10 to 4 to back a fine pitching performance from junior Trevor Breton (2-0), who struck out five, walked none, gave up a run and allowed three hits in 4-1/3 innings of work.

Sophomore Scott Hubener added a hit and two RBI for the Golden Bears, who saw every position player in the lineup get at least one hit.

A Joe Olszak sacrifice fly in the fifth spoiled the combined shutout bid for three WNE pitchers, including sophomore relievers David Cherry (1.2IP, 1H, 0ER, 1K) and Tom Mahoney (1IP, 2K).

Western New England returns to the diamond on Saturday (noon) at CCC leader Roger Williams (6-0 conference, 14-5 overall) in Bristol, R.I.
