Jeff Schult Belts Four Hits, Matt Anziano has Four Runs Batted In in 12-11 Loss at RPI

Box Score TROY, N.Y.--Senior co-captain Jeff Schult went 4-for-5, including a pair of doubles, and junior Matt Anziano had a home run among three hits and a game-best four runs batted in, to lead a 16-hit Western New England attack, but that wasn't enough as the Golden Bears were dealt a 12-11 loss at RPI in non-conference baseball action on Thursday.

The Engineers (18-10 overall) took advantage of a fielding error in the bottom of the seventh inning to tie it 11-all, and moments later Al Mersman had the last of his four hits with a double down the left field line to bring home the game-winning run.

Western New England (13-18-1) outhit RPI 16 to 14, as sophomore Doug Milne, senior co-captain Steve Ambrosino and freshman Daniel Morin joined teammates Schult and Anziano with multi-hit games, getting three, two and two, respectively.

Anziano blasted his first career home run, with a man on base, over the wall in right-center field to stake the Golden Bears to a 6-3 lead in the third inning.

RPI, however, scored three runs in its home half to knot it at 6. Andrew Kalish had a RBI double down the right field line and Jared Jensen followed with a two-run single.

Then the Engineers scored four times in the next frame to go up 10-6 for the biggest lead by either team. Shane Matthews capped the rally with a RBI-triple to left-center and then he scored on a wild pitch.

But the Golden Bears didn't quit and, in fact, took an 11-10 advantage after scoring five runs over the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. Anziano knocked in a runner from third base on a batted ball that was mishandled by the infield to tie the game 10-10 in the sixth, and then Milne had a RBI-single up the middle for the go-ahead tally in the seventh.

Sophomore Scott Hubener and Schult both contributed two RBI for WNE. For RPI, Mersman finished with three RBI, Tim LeSuer added three hits, and Nick Annunziata and Matthews each had two hits.

The see-saw game featured three lead changes, three ties and 18 runners left on base combined.

Western New England will host non-conference opponent Bridgewater State at 3:30 p.m. Friday at Pat Ricci Field at George E. Trelease Memorial Park.
