QUINCY, Mass.--The Western New England University men's tennis team saw its 2013-14 season come to an end on Monday after a 5-2 defeat at Eastern Nazarene College in the quarterfinals of the Commonwealth Coast Conference Championship. The fifth-seeded Golden Bears close at 8-9 while the host and No. 4 Lions (9-9) move on to battle top-seeded Nichols in the CCC Semifinals tomorrow at Clark University in Worcester, Mass.
Sophomore
Alexander Sause paced Western New England with two points as he downed Andres Biondi at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 7-5, and teamed with classmate
Andres Otero for a No. 1 doubles triumph over Sam McKay and Tyler Perron, 8-5.
The home team picked up a pair of doubles victories to hold a 2-1 lead at the start of singles action.
Kevin Paterno/Biondi downed WNE juniors
PJ Nassar and
Peter LeFrancois 8-5 at the No. 2 position, while Davis Steelman and Nick Thompson edged junior
John Mindek and senior
Tyler Unwin at the third doubles spot 8-6.
The Lions notched three singles wins to secure the victory.
After ENC picked up a No. 1 singles win, Sause won at No. 2 to cut the deficit to 3-2.
Eastern Nazarene grabbed a 4-2 advantage after No. 5 singles and then Paterno clinched the victory for the Lions, prevailing at the No. 4 singles slot over Unwin. Paterno claimed the first set 6-3 before outlasting Unwin in a tiebreaker to capture the second set 7-6.
LeFrancois was leading his No. 3 singles match 7-6 but it was unfinished as the outcome of the team scores was already decided.
