MIDDLETOWN, R.I.--Seniors
Adam Knapton and
Sean Lawton continued their torrid scoring spree as Western New England cruised to its fourth-consecutive win, 21-8, over host Salve Regina in a Commonwealth Coast Conference game on Saturday at Gaudet Field. The visiting Golden Bears improve to 5-6 overall and 4-0 in the CCC, while the Seahawks fall to 9-3 and 2-3 in the conference.
Knapton and Lawton each scored five goals, followed by seniors
Mike Donahue with three goals and
Colton Craig with two goals and a helper, while junior
Dan McKenna added three assists. In all, ten different Golden Bears found the back of the net as WNE set a season high in goals.
Chad Hollenshade paced Salve with three goals and an assist, Sharp Jones also netted a hat trick and Nick LoCicero contributed a trio of assists.
After three straight goals opened the game for Western New England, Hollenshade got the Seahawks on the board with an unassisted goal with 4:45 left in the first quarter. Donahue finished out the quarter with a goal from junior McKenna. The Golden Bears led 4-1 after 15 minutes.
Western New England used a seven-goal second quarter to increase its lead to 11-5 by halftime. Seniors
Owen Caruso and Craig scored back to back goals to open the second quarter before Hollenshade scored his second of the game off a quick feed from LoCicero from behind the net. Sophomore
Patrick Dillon and sophomore Jones traded a pair of goals before the Golden Bears went on a four-goal run--two apiece by Knapton and Lawton--over the next four minutes to take an 11-3 lead. Sophomore Alex King and Jones closed out the half with a pair of goals.
In the second half, Salve wouldn't get any closer than six goals on two occasions in the third quarter before WNE sealed the win with a seven-goal fourth--including six unanswered to end the game.
Western New England also dominated the boxscore in shots (56-35), shots on goal (36-22), ground balls (41-29), face-off wins (19-12), clears (19-of-19, 14-of-16), caused turnovers (12-7) and extra-man opportunities (3-for-4, 1-for-2).
Senior
Jack Liacos led the defensive effort for the Golden Bears with a game-high five caused turnovers and four ground balls, plus he scored two points on a goal and an assist. Fellow senior defender
Trevor Scott also had four ground balls. Face-off specialist
David Cedrone upped his efficiency to 69.0 percent after winning 10 of 15 draws in the "X", plus he scooped up a team-high eight ground balls.
Salve's Curtis McKeon earned a game-best 10 ground balls and was 12 for 30 in the "X."
In the last three games, Knapton has notched 17 points on nine goals and eight assists while Lawton has recorded 13 goals.
Western New England will visit Roger Williams in Bristol, R.I., in its next CCC outing on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
