Taylor Scialdone, Kaitlynn Stevens Power 'Bears Past Salve Regina in CCC Road Opener

Box Score MIDDLETOWN, R.I.--Junior Kaitlynn Stevens and sophomore Taylor Scialdone led a balanced Western New England offense as the Golden Bears women's lacrosse team moved to 11-0 on the season with a 14-9 Commonwealth Coast Conference victory at Salve Regina on Saturday at Gaudet Field. Western New England improves to 4-0 in CCC play while the Seahawks drop to 3-9 overall and 0-5 in the conference.

Stevens and Scialdone each recorded a hat trick and an assist as five other teammates also posted a multi-point afternoon, including sophomores Bethany Peters (2 goals, 1 assist), Kelsey Armstrong (2g-1a), Brooke Kumnick (2 goals) and seniors Kelsey Sherman (1g-1a) and Shelby Trebbe (1g-1a).

Sarah Woods led Salve with three goals, Abigail Tepper had two goals and an assist, and Karley Malenczak contributed two goals.

Western New England led 6-2 after the first 30 minutes and outscored the Seahawks 8-7 in the second half to hold on for the win.

The Golden Bears jumped out to a 4-0 lead on goals by Sherman, Kumnick, Peters and Scialdone within a span of 5 minutes and 41 seconds, including Sherman's unassisted tally 40 seconds after Stevens' game-opening draw control.

Kaitlin Gillespie got the Seahawks on the board at the 19:54 mark of the first half.

Salve scored the last goal of the opening half--by Woods--and the first of the second--by Grace Kelly--to close within 6-3 with 29:49 to go in the game, but Western New England wouldn't let the Seahawks get closer than that. The Golden Bears scored eight of the next 11 goals to make it a 14-6 game with 4:15 left.

Junior goalie Emily Castleman made 10 saves for the win while her counterpart Josephine O'Reilly stopped eight shots in the loss.

The teams played evenly in the statistical departments with WNE holding slight advantages in shots (30-26), shots on goal (22-19), clears (18-of-19, 15-of-22), draw controls (13-12) and turnovers (16-18). Both teams produced 11 caused turnovers and 18 ground balls.

Sherman added two caused turnovers, two draw controls and three ground balls, plus Stevens had six draw controls. For Salve, Gina Tortorici had six draw controls and Kayla Sheehan had a game-high five ground balls.

Western New England returns to action on Monday (4 p.m.) at non-league foe Castleton State in a game rescheduled from March 13.
