Steve Ambrosino, Matt Anziano Rap Two Hits Apiece in 4-0 Loss to Framingham State

Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--Senior co-captain Steve Ambrosino and junior catcher Matt Anziano each had two hits for Western New England on Tuesday, but the Golden Bears ended up on the wrong end of a 4-0 score to visiting Framingham State in non-conference baseball action at Pat Ricci Field at Trelease Memorial Park. The Rams even their overall record at 11-11 while WNE falls to 8-12 on the season.

Sophomore pitcher David Cherry turned in a quality start for the Golden Bears, allowing just two earned runs (3 total) and scattering six hits in six innings of work. He also had five strikeouts, which is a personal record at home in a royal blue and gold uniform.

Mark Mainini paced the Rams offense by going 3-for-5 with a run batted in on a double in the fifth inning. Ivan Colon also had three hits, including a double. Framingham outhit WNE 11 to 7 as the two teams combined to leave 20 runners on base.

For WNE, sophomore T.J. Wyrebek added a double while junior Steve Buckley and sophomore Kevin Marciano also had a hit apiece.

The Rams gave winning pitcher Michael Andrews (5-0) all the support he needed in the top of the third. Leadoff batter Matthew Roberge reached on a fielding error and then stole two bases before crossing the plate on a throwing error trying to catch him stealing third base. Framingham added insurance runs in the fourth, fifth and ninth innings--the latter a home run off the bat of Anthony Iafolla, who entered the game as a pinch-runner in the third.

Andrews limited WNE to four hits in six innings, plus he walked one, hit two batters and struck out two. Relievers Thomas Simas and Emmanuel Powers also combined on the shutout.

Junior Brian Mazella also pitched well in relief for WNE, scattering four hits in two scoreless innings.
