Golden Bears' Valiant Rally Falls Just Shy Versus Visiting Keene State, 8-4

Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--Four Western New England student-athletes--senior co-captain Steve Ambrosino, senior Taylor Searles, junior Matt Anziano and sophomore Scott Hubener--had two hits apiece, but the Golden Bears' furious rally fell just shy on Wednesday in an 8-4 non-conference baseball loss at the hands of visiting Keene State at Pat Ricci Field at Trelease Park.

The Owls (5-10) took what seem liked a commanding 6-0 advantage after two innings, but WNE began to chip away at the deficit with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Sophomore Kevin Marciano delivered a two-out, two-run single to right field to bring home Hubener and Anziano who walked and singled, respectively.

In the sixth, WNE pushed two more runs across the plate to make it 6-4. Hubener led off the frame with a triple down the right field line and scored on Searles single to center. The next batter, sophomore T.J. Wyrebek came into the game as a pinch-hitter and connected for a double down the left field line, who would eventually score on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Kevin Marciano.

Joe Libby paced Keene State at the plate by going 2-for-5, including a double, with three runs batted in and two runs scored. Andrew Gummow and Matt Boulay also had two hits apiece for the Owls, who got outhit by the Golden Bears by a 10 to 9 count.

The Owls, however, got two insurance runs in the ninth when Gummow was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Ian Seawards had a sacrifice fly.

Western New England wraps up its eighth game in six days at 3 p.m. Thursday against Brandeis in a non-conference game in Waltham.
