Golden Bears Crush Gordon 15-1 to Remain Unbeaten in CCC Championship Play

Box Score CCC Baseball Championship Schedule

SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--Junior Steve Buckley continued his torrid hitting performance on Saturday by going 4-for-5, including two doubles, with three runs scored and three runs batted in to pace No. 3-seed Western New England to a 15-1 victory Saturday over fifth-seeded Gordon in Game 6 of the 2014 Commonwealth Coast Conference Baseball Championship at Trelease Park.

The Golden Bears even their record to 18-18-1 on the season while the Fighting Scots slip to 19-16. Sunday's tournament schedule has WNE playing at defending CCC champion and top-seed Endicott (which eliminated No. 4 Salve Regina, 10-4) while No. 2 Roger Williams (which eliminated No. 6 Wentworth, 4-3) will be at Gordon in a loser-out game, with both games starting at 11 a.m. The WNE/Endicott loser will meet the RWU/GC winner later in the day at Endicott, beginning at 3:30 p.m.

Senior co-captain Steve Ambrosino added two hits and scored four runs for the WNE offense, which took advantage of 12 walks by Scots' pitching and had 11 hits to produce a season-high 15 runs at home.

Junior starting pitcher Trevor Breton worked five scoreless innings of four-hit baseball to go along with five strikeouts to pick up the victory, improving to 6-1 on the season. He did not issue a walk. Freshman Andrew Mulvey threw the last three innings to earn his first career save for the Golden Bears. Mulvey allowed three singles and an unearned run, but did not walk a batter and had strikeouts.

Jesse Amaya and Alonzo Martinez had two hits apiece to lead Gordon, which broke up the Golden Bears' shutout bid with a ninth-inning single through the right side off the bat of Alex German to score Carlos Pichardo from second base.

Western New England jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning and it wouldn't look back. Buckley and senior co-captain Jeff Schult had RBI-doubles and Ambrosino scored on a bobble by the left fielder. Schult finished with three walks and two RBI.

The Golden Bears scored four more times--all with two outs--in the next frame to take a commanding 7-0 lead. Buckley got it going with a two-run single up the middle as WNE also plated a couple of runs with the benefit of a fielding error by the infield and a wild pitch.

Western New England also scored once in the fourth, four times in the fifth and three more in the eighth.

Buckley is hitting .667 (8-12) and has seven RBI over his last three games, and has 13 total bases for a 1.083 slugging percentage over that time. The team's leading run-producer now has 27 RBI, which puts him sixth in the conference.
