Maurice Young's First Career Goal in OT Lifts Men's Soccer Past Keene State, 2-1

Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--Freshman Maurice Young scored his first career goal as a Golden Bear just 1 minute and 36 seconds into overtime to lift host Western New England to a 2-1 victory Wednesday over Keene State in non-conference men's soccer action at Suprenant Field. The Golden Bears won their seventh-straight home game dating to last year--including 3-0 this season--and improve to 4-2 overall, while the Owls of the Little East Conference dip to 1-3.

Sophomore keeper Kevin Strobel had to make eight saves as Western New England was outshot 21 to 11 (9-6 on goal) for the contest. The starting back four of co-captains Chris Bruton, Colin Macdonald, Matthew Chmura and Yeboa Amofa cleared out many dangerous scoring opportunities for Keene State.

The Owls' forced the extra 10-minute, sudden-victory session because Eddie Mercer scored his first goal of the season in the 28th minute. Promise Kpee made a low cross from the right flank into the middle of the box where Mercer one-timed the equalizer from about 7 yards out.

Kory Caster's first goal of the season off a feed from Ryan Dickinson in the 17th minute gave WNE a 1-0 advantage. Caster cut right at the top of the penalty and took a touch before rifling a right-footed shot inside the left post. Dickinson ended the afternoon with two assists, as he also got the primary assist on Young's game-winning goal.

The decisive tally developed when junior Luis Agrait sent a long pass up the left wing to Dickinson, who dribbled down to the end line where he delivered a low crossing pass to Young in front of the Owls' goal.

Western New England had a chance to win in regulation as two shots hit the post: freshman Jordan Martins in the 59th minute and sophomore Scott Trautwein in the 84th.

Keene State had an early opportunity to jump on the scoreboard when Kpee hit the crossbar in the 6th minute. The Owls put another close scare on the WNE crowd in the 85th minute when Mercer's blast went high and moments later Matt Langford's flick header went just wide.

Jacob Walker started in the Keene goal and ended up with one save while playing the first half. Mike Ketterman took the loss after playing the final 46:36 and making three stops.

The Golden Bears' next match will be on Homecoming at 11 a.m. Saturday versus Eastern Nazarene College in the Commonwealth Coast Conference opener at Suprenant Field.
