Jordan Martins Makes Men's Soccer a Winner in CCC Opener over Lions in Double OT, 2-1

Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--Freshman Jordan Martins registered his first career collegiate goal in the 102nd minute to send the Western New England University men's soccer team to a thrilling 2-1 double-overtime victory over Eastern Nazarene College at Suprenant Field on Saturday. In the Commonwealth Coast Conference opener for both teams, the Golden Bears celebrated their Homecoming win to improve to 5-2 on the season--including three consecutive wins all via overtime--while the Lions fall to 3-2.

Martins' exciting tally came off assists by sophomores Kory Caster and Alan Haberern.

Leading 1-0 late in the second half, Western New England was on the verge of a regulation win before Eastern Nazarene's Andrew Nelson stunned the Golden Bears with his CCC-leading fifth goal, unassisted, with only three ticks left on the clock, spoiling sophomore Kevin Strobel's fourth shutout bid.

Sophomore Scott Trautwein opened the scoring for the Golden Bears in the 74th minute. Trautwein notched his second goal of 2014 on assists from junior Chad Burke and Caster. Burke was making his season debut this afternoon.

Western New England pressed ENC all day long, outshooting the Lions 24-17 (9-6 on goal) and getting 13 corner kicks to none for the visitors. The Golden Bears were also whistled for seven offside calls to further evidence their aggressive attacking.

Jake Johnson had seven saves for Eastern Nazarene, and Strobel ended up with five.

This was a physical game as the referee issued six yellow cards and the teams combined for 24 fouls.

Western New England concludes a season-long three-game homestand at 4 p.m. Wednesday against non-conference foe Framingham State.
