BRISTOL, R.I.--James Sheldon netted the game-winning goal on a penalty kick in the 107th minute to lift host Roger Williams to a 1-0 victory in double overtime over Western New England in a Commonwealth Coast Conference men's soccer contest at Bayside Field on Saturday. The Hawks improve to 4-3-1 overall while the Golden Bears drop to 5-3-1; both teams are now 1-1 in the CCC.
Western New England came out aggressive in the beginning of the game, outshooting the Hawks 8-0 in the first 14 minutes. The Golden Bears had a couple of scoring chances to jump out to an early lead. In the second minute, sophomoreÂÂ
Alan Haberern sent a shot on net that Hawk keeper Tom Mangels was just able to get a hand on. Five minutes later, classmate
Scott Trautwein found himself ahead of the Hawk defense in the box with just Mangels in front of him, but sent his chip shot over the crossbar.
The Hawks were not without their chances as well. In the 13th minute, Charlie Mader stepped up with a clear shot from the left side of the box, but just glanced it off the left post. Then in the 18th minute, Sheldon fired a head-on shot at Golden Bear goalie
Kevin Strobel but did not get enough on the shot as Strobel made an easy save.
Western New England's
Ryan Dunnigan made a crucial sliding step on a pass across the box by Dan Kelly in the 35th minute. His play denied a good chance for the Hawks to put a shot on frame.
In the second half, the Hawks began to assert themselves by getting more aggressive in the open field and getting more shot opportunities. In the period, RWU more than doubled its offensive output in the period, putting up 11 shots in the half compared to five in the first half. However, neither team would be able to find the back of the net by the end of regulation or the end of the first 10-minute overtime period.
The game appeared to be headed for a scoreless tie until Sheldon was brought down in the box with 3 minutes and 4 seconds to play, setting up a penalty kick. Sheldon would step up and bury the shot into the right corner to send the Hawks home as winners in a hard-fought battle.
Mangels collected his fourth shutout of the season in the win, making eight saves in the game. Strobel finished with six stops for the Golden Bears.
Western New England steps out of conference play on Wednesday (4 p.m.) to travel to Middletown, Conn., for a date with Wesleyan University.
