Box Score
SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--Sophomore
Scott Trautwein scored the only goal of the game with four minutes left in overtime, and classmate
Kevin Strobel had a career-high 13 saves, to help Western New England University to a 1-0 non-conference victory over city rival Springfield College in men's soccer action at Suprenant Field on Sunday. The Golden Bears improve to 7-4-1 on the season after winning their fourth OT contest, while the Pride slip to 4-2-4 overall.
The decisive play occurred when sophomore
Ryan Dickinson received a pass in the left side of the penalty area from midfield and beat his defender to the end line, flicking a pass with the outside of his right foot to Trautwein. In stride, Trautwein one-timed a shot from in front of the 6-yard box that was saved by Springfield keeper Billy Schmid, but the rebound went right back to Trautwein who slotted another shot into the lower right-corner for his team-leading third of the season. It also marks his second game-winning tally of 2014.
Springfield had the first solid opportunity to score in the extra 10-minute session when Luke Alvaro's shot from 14 yards just grazed the left post 23 seconds in.
But the Golden Bears swarmed the Pride defense after that. Dickinson had the first of three shots that were blocked down by Springfield, followed by a pair from junior co-captain
Colin Macdonald who came up from his defensive spot to try to end it. Shots were 6-1 in favor of WNE during the overtime.
Schmid finished with nine saves off 24 Golden Bears shots.
Defenders Drew Sommer and Ryan Malone pushed up field offensively for Springfield, recording nine and seven shots to lead a team that recorded 32 (13 to 11 on goal).
This was not a typical scoreless match as it featured a lot of see-saw action with both teams getting quality chances. Springfield pushed the tempo in the first half, outshooting WNE by a 17-5 margin. In the 8th minute, Alvaro received a through-ball past the Golden Bears defense but Macdonald was able to chase him down in the penalty area and tackle the ball away. After Malone had a shot that went just high on a free kick, Taylor Gilfoy had a chance that was blocked, Sommer was stopped by Strobel from close range and Gilfoy followed with the rebound that was stopped again by Strobel--all within a minute apart.
In the 40th minute, senior co-captain
Chris Bruton had perhaps WNE's best opportunity in the first half when his shot was cleared off the goal line by Malone.
Western New England, however, revved up its offensive pressure in the second half when it registered 13 shots to 14 for Springfield. In the 81st minute, freshmen
Matthew Chmura and
Connor Rubin had back-to-back shots 4 seconds apart that were blocked away. In the 82nd, sophomore defender
Neil Williams drilled a shot through a maze of players from 35 yards out that Schmid saved. Dickinson had another good look in the waning seconds that was blocked.
Malone nearly put the Pride in a position to win late with 2 minutes and 13 seconds remaining in regulation, but his curling shot hit the crossbar. In the 50th minute, he was stymied by Strobel who dove to his left to get his hand on a low shot that was deflected for a corner kick.
Both keepers played well making tough saves from close range and cutting off crosses.
Western New England's next game is Wednesday (7 p.m.) against nationally-ranked Amherst College, which is hosting the non-conference contest at a neutral site at Lusitano Stadium in Ludlow.
