Third Quarter Pushes Top-Ranked Tufts Past the Visiting Golden Bears, 21-8

Box Score MEDFORD, Mass.--Sophomore Justin Bard led Western New England with four goals, but top-ranked Tufts outscored the Golden Bears 10 to 1 in the third quarter to secure a 21-8 victory Tuesday in non-conference men's lacrosse action at Bello Field. Western New England falls to 3-4 on the season while the host Jumbos--who captured the NCAA Division III championship last May--improve to 7-0.

Sophomore Max Berteletti finished with a goal and an assist for the Golden Bears. Sophomore Keegan Dudeck joined senior Jon Bota in assisting twice. Senior Brandon Body had 13 saves in the Golden Bears' cage, and junior David Cedrone had a game-high-tying four ground balls.

Tufts junior John Uppgren led all players with five goals and seven points, while classmate Ben Andreycak scored four times and sophomore Austin Carbone getting three assists, two goals.

Except for the third quarter, Western New England held steady versus Tufts which led 4-2 after 15 minutes and 9-5 at halftime. Both teams found the back of the cage twice in the fourth.

With the game tied 5-5 midway into the second quarter, junior Connor Bilby (1 assist) scored three goals to fuel a 14-0 run for the Jumbos. Eight different Jumbos scored goals during the 14-goal streak.

Bard snapped Tufts' scoring streak with 17 seconds left in the third with WNE on the man-up. That Golden Bears unit continued to excel, scoring three times on seven opportunities.

Western New England had tied the game on Bard's goal assisted by Bota making it 5-5 with 7 minutes and 23 seconds left in the second quarter. Bota also assisted on senior captain Garrett Mullins' goal which started the quarter for WNE.

Tufts would finish the second with four goals to lead 9-5 at intermission, including a pretty behind-the-back shot by junior Garrett Clarke and two man-up goals from Uppgren.

Tufts was three for four with man-advantages overall. The Jumbos finished with a 51-44 advantage in shots, 37-19 in ground balls and 22-11 in face-offs. Sophomore Blake Wood had four ground balls defensively. Junior Alex Salazar, one of four goalkeepers used on the day, earned the win with 15 saves in 41:38 of play.

The Golden Bears will be at Nichols College in Dudley on Thursday for a 4 p.m. Commonwealth Coast Conference contest in the start of their CCC championship defense. Tufts travels to Connecticut College for New England Small College Athletic Conference action on Saturday at 5 p.m.
