SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (March 23, 2016) - The Western New England University women's lacrosse team posted a 6-0 run during a ten-minute stetch in the first half on its way to a 14-6 victory over Mount Holyoke College this evening in non-conference action at Mount Holyoke's Turf and Track Complex.
Seniors
Taylor Scialdone (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) and
Brooke Kumnick (Granby, Conn.) led the way for Western New England (5-2), combining for ten goals and three assists in the win. Scialdone, who recorded eight points (six goals, two assists) tonight, is now tied with Lindsey Fenton '10 for the most points in program history (323). Mount Holyoke drops to 1-3 with the loss.
Sophomore
Julia Winer (Longmeadow, Mass.) chipped in with four points (one goal, three assists), while senior
Emma Norden (Belchertown, Mass.) added two goals.
Sophomore
Shannon McFadden (West Islip, N.Y.) earned the win in goal, stopping seven of Mount Holyoke's 13 shots.
Senior
Julia Bell (Longmeadow, Mass.) found the back of the net a team-high four times for the Lyons, while classmate
Catherine Ryan (Longmeadow, Mass.) dished out four assists, three of which set up goals by Bell.
Winer found Kumnick for the game's opening goal six and a half minutes in, but Bell equalized for the home team at the 20:36 mark. Winer then sparked Western New England's 6-0 run with an unassisted tally two minutes later, as Scialdone netted three straight for the Golden Bears and Kumnick added a pair.
Bell halted the run with her second goal of the night with 1:11 left in the half, before cutting the home team's deficit to four (7-3) with another 26 seconds later. Kumnick restored Western New England's five-goal lead just before the half, however, beating Mount Holyoke junior
Isa Rodriguez (Columbus, Ohio) with just two seconds on the clock.
The Lyons stayed within striking distance as the two teams traded goals early in the second half, before a 4-0 Golden Bear run put the game out of reach. Freshman
Kristen Breen (Ellington, Conn.) got it started with her third of the season at the 16:45 mark, while Scialdone struck again 3:39 later and Norden capped the run with a pair of goals.
Junior
Charlotte Wagner (West Chester, Pa.) scored in the closing seconds for Mount Holyoke, cutting Western New England's final margin of victory to eight.
The Golden Bears held an advantage in almost every statistical category, including shots (30-17), shots on goal (21-13), ground balls (22-20), draw controls (11-9) and free position shots (3-2).
Western New England returns to action next Tuesday night with its Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) opener at Salve Regina, while Mount Holyoke heads to Saratoga Springs, N.Y. for a Saturday afternoon contest at Skidmore.
