Scialdone Becomes All-Time Points Leader as WNE Opens CCC Play with 15-8 Win at Salve Regina

Box Score
MIDDLETOWN, R.I. (March 29, 2016) - Senior Taylor Scialdone (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) became Western New England University's all-time points leader as the Golden Bears opened Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play with a 15-8 victory over Salve Regina University this evening at Gaudet Field.

Scialdone scored a career-high seven goals and added two assists, finishing with nine points as Western New England (6-2, 1-0 CCC) extended its regular season CCC winning streak to 23 games. With her nine-point effort, the senior moved past Lindsey Fenton '10 and into sole possession of first place on the women's lacrosse program's all-time scoring list with 332 points.

Classmate Brooke Kumnick (Granby, Conn.) was also a key offensive contributor, matching her career-high with five goals, while senior Ashley Brunner (Stratford, Conn.) chipped in with three points (one goal, two assists). Sophomore goalie Shannon McFadden (West Islip, N.Y.) made 14 saves on 22 shots in the cage, earning her sixth win of the season.

Senior Abigail Tepper (Foxboro, Mass.) and juniors Kaitlin Gillespie (Haddam, Conn.) and Courtney Moulton (Merrimack, N.H.) paced the offense for the Seahawks with two goals each.

The Golden Bears opened up the scoring 8:21 into the game on Kumnick's first of the contest, and extended the margin to two just 28 seconds later on an unassisted tally by Scialdone.

The Seahawks would erase their early deficit just minutes later after two quick goals by Gillespie. The 2-2 score remained for just over four minutes before the Golden Bears went on a four-goal run to extend the lead to 6-2 with six minutes left in the half. Tepper cut the Seahawks' deficit to three (6-3) heading into the break with a goal with 2:39 on the clock.

At the start of the second half, the Golden Bears seized the momentum and added three tallies before the 27 minute mark, opening up a 9-3 advantage. The Seahawks attempted to claw their way back into the game with quick responses but the Golden Bear offensive attack was too much to handle.

The teams were even on shots at 31, while the Golden Bears held an advantage in shots on goal (26-22) and saves (14-11). The Seahawks led in draw controls (14-10) and ground balls (27-26).

The Golden Bears are back in action on Thursday at home with a non-conference matchup against Bridgewater State, while the Seahawks (1-5, 0-1 CCC) host Rhode Island College, also on Thursday.
