Golden Bears Fall Behind Early in 11-3 Setback at Keene State

Box Score
KEENE, N.H. (April 25, 2016) - The Western New England University baseball team fell behind early and was unable to recover, as the Golden Bears fell to Keene State College 11-3 this afternoon in non-conference action at the Owl Athletic Complex.

Keene State scored three runs in the bottom of the first and added single runs in the second, third and fourth innings, as the Owls were able to avenge last Monday's 6-3 loss to Western New England in Springfield.

Senior shortstop Kevin Marciano (Pepperell, Mass.) led the Golden Bears with a 2-for-3 effort at the plate, to go with a walk and one run scored. Classmate T.J. Wyrebek (Bristol, Conn.) reached base four times with a single, two walks and a hit by pitch, while freshman Adam vonFischer (Cheshire, Conn.) recorded his first career RBI.

Freshmen pitchers Liam Davey (Cheshire, Conn.) and Will Krasovec (Haverhill, Mass.) combined to shut the Owls out over the final 2.1 innings.

Keene State was led by freshman outfielder Devin Springfield (Jaffrey, N.H.), who went 3-for-4 with two RBI and three runs. Senior Billy Hartmann (Greenland, N.H.) also drove in two runs with a pair of sacrifice flies.

The Owls wasted no time in getting on the board, as senior Joe Libby (Hooksett, N.H.) led off the bottom of the first with a triple to right field before coming in to score when Hartmann followed with the first of his two sacrifice flies. Springfield added an RBI single later in the frame, as did freshman Connor Longley (Foxboro, Mass.).

Western New England cut one run off its deficit in the top of the second, when vonFischer drove in classmate Joe Cassella (Wallingford, Conn.) with a single to left center field, but the Owls were able to extend their advantage to 6-1 after four innings of play.

The Golden Bears stayed within striking distance, as Marciano led off the fifth with a single to center field before coming in to score on an RBI groundout by senior Brett Morgan (Norwell, Mass.).

Leading 6-2 entering the bottom of the sixth, the Owls broke the game open with five runs in the frame.

Western New England capped the scoring in the top of the ninth on senior Scott Hubener's (Mendon, Mass.) RBI single, which plated freshman Brian Valeriano (Stratford, Conn.).

Both teams will be back in action tomorrow, as the Golden Bears (23-9, 9-3 CCC) return home to host MIT, and Keene State (14-18, 3-6 LEC) hits the road to face Plymouth State.
