Box Score Sophomore Emily Antinozzi leads Western New England with career high eight points
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (September 1, 2016) – The Western New England University field hockey team rolled to a 9-1 victory over Wheelock College this evening in its 2016 season opener at Golden Bear Stadium.
Top Performers
• Sophomore midfielder Emily Antinozzi (Rye, N.Y.) fueled the Golden Bear offense with a career-high eight points, scoring three goals to go with a pair of assists. Antinozzi led all players in both shots (six) and shots on goal (four).
• Junior forward Brittany DeLima (Branchville, N.J.) also posted a multi-point effort, tallying two goals and one assist.
• Junior forward Allison Jackson (Mahopac, N.Y.) dished out a pair of assists, setting up freshman Madison Barron's (Lebanon, Pa.) first career goal midway through the first half before adding another helper on Antinozzi's second marker in the 50th minute.
• Freshman Melanie Newburg (Raynham, Mass.) scored the lone goal of the evening for the Wildcats, cutting the visitors' deficit to 2-1 early in the first half.
How it Happened
• Junior Amber Meehan (Orange, Mass.) got the Golden Bears on the board just under six minutes into the contest on a feed from Antinozzi, and Antinozzi then made it 2-0 in favor of the hosts at the 8:04 mark with an unassisted goal.
• Wheelock answered on Newburg's unassisted tally four and a half minutes later, but it was all Western New England the rest of the way, as the Golden Bears reeled off four straight goals to open up a 6-1 lead heading into the half.
• Antinozzi completed her hat trick at 53:06 of the second period, and freshman Megan Sweeney (Sutton, Mass.) wrapped up the scoring with her first collegiate goal late in the contest.
Notes
• Western New England held advantages in both shots (18-5) and penalty corners (14-7).
• The Golden Bears have now defeated Wheelock in three consecutive season openers after posting a 7-1 triumph last fall and a 4-2 victory in 2014.

Both teams will be back in action on Saturday at noon, as Western New England (1-0) travels to Westfield State and Wheelock (0-1) returns home to Boston to host New England College.
