Golden Bears Cruise to 8-1 Win Over Elmhurst in Florida

ORLANDO, Fla. (March 21, 2018) – The Western New England University men's tennis team cruised to an 8-1 win over Elmhurst (Ill.) College on Wednesday evening at the USTA National Campus.

Western New England won all three doubles matches to open up a 3-0 lead. Sophomore David Kalmer (Slingerlands, N.Y.) teamed up with junior Justin Kohut (South Windsor, Conn.) for an 8-2 win over Grant O'Connell and Shawn Sabaricos at No. 1.

Sophomore Luke Surawski (Wethersfield, Conn.) and freshman Max Gordon (Middleton, Mass.) won 8-2 at No. 2, while the freshmen duo of Matthew Russell (Auburn, Mass.) and Peter Stegemann (Falmouth, Maine) won by the same score at No. 3.

In singles play, Kalmer edged Sabaricos 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 at No. 1, and Surawski earned a 6-2, 6-1 result over O'Connell at No. 2.

Elmhurst's lone win came courtesy of David Demoll, who defeated Stegemann 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3.

Gordon, junior Michael Tran (West Haven, Conn.) and sophomore Griffin Arnold (Meriden, Conn.) were victorious in the fourth, fifth and sixth spots, respectively.

Western New England (2-0) resumes its spring break trip with a match against Hamline (Minn.) University at 10 a.m. at the Lake Cane Tennis Center.
