Western New England Opens CCC Slate with 8-1 Victory over Wentworth

Golden Bears sweep doubles, win five of six singles flights

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (March 27, 2018) –
The Western New England University men's tennis team opened Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play with an 8-1 victory over Wentworth Institute of Technology on Tuesday afternoon at the Volvo Outdoor Courts. 

Western New England claimed all three doubles matchups and five of six singles flights en route to its fourth win of the spring.

At the top of the Golden Bears' doubles lineup, sophomore David Kalmer (Slingerlands, N.Y.) and junior Justin Kohut (South Windsor, N.Y.) claimed an 8-3 victory over Jeff Tocco and Seng Ly.

Sophomore Luke Surawski (Wethersfield, Conn.) and freshman Max Gordon (Middleton, Mass.) won by the same score over Tyler Hall and Alex Mularski at No. 2, while the freshmen duo of Matthew Russell (Auburn, Mass.) and Peter Stegemann (Falmouth, Maine) posted an 8-4 triumph over Jarrett North and Tristan Maus at No. 3.

Singles play was highlighted by several closely contested matchups, including Kalmer's 6-2, 4-6, 10-5 result over Tocco at No. 1. Surawski edged Hall, 6-7, 6-2, 10-4 at No. 2, and Gordon earned a 6-4, 2-6, 10-7 win over Ly at No. 4.

North was responsible for Wentworth's only win of the match, as he defeated Stegemann 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3.

Rounding out the final two flights, junior Michael Tran (West Haven, Conn.) topped Maus 7-5, 6-3 at No. 5, and sophomore Griffin Arnold (Meriden, Conn.) earned a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 6.

Western New England (4-1, 1-0 CCC) travels to Pittsfield, Mass. for a non-conference match against MCLA on Friday at 4 p.m., while Wentworth (2-4, 0-2 CCC) hits the road for a contest at Salem State on Saturday.
