Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (March 31, 2021) – The Western New England University baseball team opened their season with a 9-6 win over Wentworth in non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon at Trelease Park.
Top Performers
Sophomore Vincent Caccavale hit a two-run home run for the Golden Bears. First-year Aaron Cole, sophomore Sean Jamieson, and Caccavale each had two hits. Sophomore Paul Villeco and Cole each had a triple.
Graduate student Dillon Koster hit a three-run home run for the Leopards.
Game Review
The Golden Bears jumped out to an early 3-0 at the end of the first inning. Western New England extended their lead in the bottom of the second inning when they took advantage of a bases loaded opportunity. After Caccavale loaded the bases after a single to right center field, the Golden Bears scored on the next four at-bats to push the lead to 7-0.
Wentworth scored six runs over the next four innings, including the three-run home run from Koster in the top of the fifth inning, to cut the deficit to one with a score of 7-6. In the bottom of the sixth inning, Caccavale hit the two-run home run to make it a 9-6 game.
The Western New England bullpen only allowed one hit over the final three innings to hold onto the win.
