(April 6, 2025) – The Western New England baseball team fell in both games of a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon from North Field on the campus of Endicott College, falling 6-1 in game one before taking the NCAA's best offensive team to extra innings in the second game of the day before falling 7-2 in ten innings.

Records:
  • Western New England: 12-10, 1-4 CNE
  • No. 6 Endicott College: 18-3, 6-0 CNE
How It Happened: (Game 1)

Despite holding the nation's top offense to five hits of the game, the Gulls would come away with two late big flies to take control of the lead and never look back. Endicott would bat as the road team in Sunday's doubleheader despite hosting the two contests because of the originally scheduled games at Trelease Park. Endicott threatened and scored right away in the top of the first inning getting the first three batters to reach, including two singles off Jared Kuryan. EC's Kyle Grabowski contributed to the first run of the game for the Gulls but would cause two outs, bouncing into a 6-3 double play, putting one run on the board but two big outs for WNE. Endicott would add a run in the inning stealing home after a miscue by the Golden Bears that allowed two stolen bases on the play. After three outs in the inning, the Gulls took a 2-0 lead. Canon Marshall led the bottom of the first off with a single up the middle, but the Golden Bears could do nothing with the hit. WNE would add two more hits in the bottom of the second after both Tyler Kornacki and Antonio Galizia would collect singles, but the Golden Bears would go down swinging as Endicott led onto the 2-0 lead after two innings of play.

Marshall would stay hot from the plate, leading the bottom of the third inning off with a double down the left field line. Western New England would go down swinging again in back-to-back at-bats but a clutch RBI double from Jack Loftus would cut Endicott's lead in half, putting the Golden Bears on the scoreboard, trailing now 2-1. Leo Paragarino would single in the infield in the next at-bat but WNE would not be able to tie the game. Kuryan would continue to cruise past the offensively gifted Gulls lineup, getting two strikeouts in the top of the fourth inning and another to his resume in the top of the fifth. Kuryan would give up his last run of the game on a sacrifice fly in the top of the. Endicott's A.J. Hamm would walk and advance on two wild pitches by Kuryan before scoring on the fly ball out.

The Golden Bears would go down in order in the bottom of the sixth inning while Troy Donohue would look to carry Kuryan's strong start into the seventh inning, but the Gulls would connect on a two-run home run in the inning as Robbie Wladkowski would crank a shot down the left field line, giving Endicott a 5-1 lead. Donohue would give up a solo shot in the eighth inning as the Gulls pulled away from WNE, leading 6-1. John Bova would collect a pinch-hit single in the bottom of the ninth, but it would not be enough to score any further runs for the Golden Bears, who fell 6-1 in the opening game of the doubleheader.

How It Happened (Game 2):

For the second straight game, the Gulls opened the top of the first inning with a run coming off Matt Laura, who pitched the first five innings for the Golden Bears in the second game. Lauria would give up a leadoff single while a groundout by the Gulls would bring home that run to quickly send Endicott ahead 1-0. Lauria would leave one on base and give up two hits in the top of the first. Endicott was not done there, coming up with a second run in the top of the second inning, starting the inning off with another single, and eventually coming around to score on an RBI single as the hot offense of the Gulls would collect four hits in the first two innings off the WNE ace. WNE bounced back in the bottom of the first inning, seeing five straight Golden Bears reach to even the score at two. Jack Loftus began the bottom of the inning with a walk-off Nicholas Cannata, who started and lasted the first three innings for the Gulls. Leo Paragarino would single, followed by another single on a bunt by Greg Nivison, loading the bases for the Golden Bears with no outs. Connor Cowern would take a hit-by-pitch to deliver the first run of the game for Western New England. The Golden Bears would then get a single to center field by Antonio Galizia to tie the game at two. Still, the bases would be loaded with no outs but a double play and ground ball out would end the inning, but the Golden Bears came away with two important runs to tie the game after two innings of play.

Both squads picked up a hit in the third inning but could not add any runs to the board. Andrew Florek led off the bottom of the inning with a single but could not advance any additional bases. The Gulls would threaten in the top of the fourth inning, getting back-to-back singles while another would reach on an error but a flyout would end the inning as the Gulls left the bases loaded. Lauria's final inning would see the Gulls down in order, getting two ground ball outs and a line out. Lauria went the first five innings, giving up seven hits and two walks while striking out one.
Tanner Wall would come into the game in the top of the sixth inning for the Golden Bears and would get the heart of the Gulls order in order, including two pop-ups to set down the green and blue. Greg Nivison would reach in the bottom of the sixth on an error from Endicott and advanced to second base on the error but Nivison would stay at second as WNE could not string together any hits.

The eighth inning loaded the bases for Western New England as Ryan Monitni began with a single while Jack Loftus was hit by a pitch, putting the first two batters on base. The next two Golden Bears would record an out but Connor Cowern would reach base on a strikeout, swinging at a wild pitch to reach first and load the bases. Western New England would go down swinging with the bases loaded to end the threat. The game would need extra innings where would swing of the bat with the bases loaded would break the game wide open for Endicott after Zach Stephenson would launch a grand slam home run to left center field to add to the one run already scored in the inning for the Gulls, who came out with a 7-2 lead after the top of the tenth. Western New England would get a single in the bottom of the inning with one out to continue Western New England's chances. John Bova would reach on a walk for WNE, putting runners quickly on first and second base with still one out. The Golden Bears would go down swinging for the final two outs of the game and would fall by a final score of 7-2 in ten innings.
