No. 13 Amherst holds off upset-minded Western New England College

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Sophomore Derek Cherney (Chappaqua, NY) had two goals and two assists, including the game-winning score with 12:43 left in the fourth period, as No. 13 Amherst College held on for a 10-9 victory over upset-minded Western New England College in a non conference game.

 

Senior Alex Casertano (Millbrook, NY) added two goals and an assist as the Lord Jeffs  improved their record to 5-1. Senior goalie Cushing Donelan (Noroton, CT) compiled nine saves.

 

Senior Patrick Matthews (Middle Island, NY) led the Golden Bears with three goals while freshman Bryan Cofrin (Londonderry, NH) had a goal and assist.

 

Sophomore Adam Cherry (Westfield, MA) contributed two goals to become the first Western New England College sophomore to reach 100 career points.

 

Freshman goalie Chris Body (Newtown, CT) finished with 10 saves.

 

Cherney's last goal gave Amherst a 10-6 lead before WNEC made things interesting by scoring three times in the final 9:11, including a goal by Matthews with .02 seconds left in the contest.

 

Western New England College's student-athletes honored athletic trainer Mike Vallee during half-time as part of National Student-Athlete Day. Vallee is recovering from a serious car accident.

 

Athletics director Mike Theulen thanked the student athletes for their contributions on the playing fields and in the classroom. He also thanked Amherst College for their support of the half-time program.
