Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Top-seeded Western New England College put an exclamation point on a most satisfying season with a convincing 21-7 victory over sixth-seeded Plymouth State University on Sunday for its second straight Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III New England Championship title.
The Golden Bears finished with a 14-6 record that tied the school mark for wins set by last year's ECAC championship squad (14-7).
Senior CJ Annunciata (Waltham, MA) led a balanced scoring attack with four goals and two assists to earn the Tournament Most Valuable Player Award.
Sophomore Adam Cherry (Westfield, MA) added four goals and an assist while senior Pat Matthews (Middle Island, NY) had two goals and three assists. Sophomore Jason Whitehouse (Gilmanton, NH) contributed a career high four goals while freshman Brody Savoie (Wilbraham, MA) chipped-in with two goals and an assist.
Plymouth State had advanced to the championship game after compiling a pair of one-goal victories over third-seeded Lasell (9-8) and second-seeded Eastern Connecticut (13-12 in overtime).
The Panthers looked like they might challenge the Golden Bears by taking an early 2-0 lead on goals by sophomore Nick Pearson and junior Jon Gagnon less than six minutes into the game.
Western New England College responded with 14 unanswered goals, including nine in the second quarter for a 10-2 half-time lead. The Golden Bears' defense held the Panthers scoreless for 30 minutes, 52 seconds at one point in the game.
Gagnon and junior Bobby Dabrieo each scored twice for Plymouth (9-8)Â while Pearson finished with a goal and assist. Junior John Padua recorded two assists.
