Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass. â€" In a match-up of two of the top teams in the Pilgrim League, junior Adam Cherry (Westfield, MA) and senior Joe Cassani(Barre, VT) combined for 10 goals and an assist to lead No. 19 Western New England College to a 15-7 men's lacrosse victory over visiting Lasell College Saturday at Golden Bear Stadium.
Cherry finished with six goals while Cassani had four goals and an assist that gave him 99 career points as the Golden Bears improved to 8-1 overall while staying undefeated in the league at 3-0. Cherry and Cassani both play attack positions. Sophomore goalie Chris Body (Newtown, CT) had 15 saves in a solid performance.
Sophomore midfielder Travis Brown (Montpelier, VT) picked-up nine ground balls while freshman defender Stephen Toomey (Northborough, MA) had seven. Senior defenders Mark Bergey (Ambler, PA) and Kevin Batson(Kennebunk, ME) each recorded five ground balls as well.
Lasell took a 3-2 lead after the opening period before the Golden Bears outscored the Lasers by a 5-1 margin in the second quarter to take a 7-4 lead at halftime. Five more goals in the third stanza gave WNEC a comfortable 12-6 advantage heading into the final quarter.
Senior attack player Kyle Minaker (Newton, MA) had two goals and two assists for the Lasers (7-2, 1-1) while junior attacker Al Zayac (West Springfield, MA) added two scores. Sophomore goalie Mark DeMieri (Seaford, NY) made a strong showing compiling 27 saves.
