Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass. â€" Sophomore midfielder Bryan Cofrin (Londonderry, NH) had a seven-point game with five goals and two assists to lead No. 17 Western New England College to an 18-8 victory over Babson in a semifinal round game of the Pilgrim League Tournament.
The Golden Bears improved their record to 14-2 that tied the school record for wins previously set in 2004 and 2005.
Junior attack player Adam Cherry (Westfield, MA) contributed four goals and two assists while senior attacker Joe Cassani (Barre, VT) and sophomore attacker Mike Kelly (Cheshire, CT) each added three goals and an assist. Sophomore Chris Body (Newtown, CT) was steady in the net finishing with 11 saves.
Western New England College took a 6-2 lead after the first quarter but didn’t score in the second stanza as Babson tallied twice to trail by only two at intermission. The Golden Bears broke the game open by outscoring the Beavers 7-1 in the third period as Cherry netted three of his goals in a 2:31 span late in the period.
Senior midfielder Mike O’Connell (Dedham, MA) scored five goals for Babson (5-10) while freshman attacker E.J. Peterson (Framingham, MA) hit the back of the net twice.
Western New England College will host city rival Springfield at noon Saturday (May 6) in the Pilgrim League Tournament championship game. The Pride advanced to the final with a 14-7 win over Wheaton.
This is the fifth straight year that WNEC and Springfield will play for the Pilgrim title. Springfield is the three-time defending champion.
