Jon Hayes nets game-winner as Western New England College downs Hartwick in overtime

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Junior midfielder Jon Hayes (Waltham, MA) scored the game-winner with his first goal of the season with 1:32 left in overtime as No. 20 Western New England College defeated visiting Hartwick College 7-6 in a hard-fought non-league game Saturday (March 10).

Senior attacker Adam Cherry (Westfield, MA) fired home two goals while senior midfielder Rob Ostrem (West Islip, NY) and junior attacker Bryan Cofrin (Londonderry, NH) each added a goal and assist.

Hartwick received two goals from sophomore midfielder Steve Caramello (Duxbury, MA). Senior attacker Lee Austin (Duxbury, MA), senior midfielder Pat McCormack (Camillus, NY), and freshman midfielder Brandon Wilk (Hillsborough, NJ) each contributed a goal and assist.

Western New England College (2-0) led 2-0 after the opening period following goals by Ostrem and junior midfielder Tim Heffernan (Glastonbury, CT) in the final 2:23 of the period. The Golden Bears extended their margin to 3-0 when Cofrin tallied at 10:06 of the second stanza. Caramello scored both his goals in the last 8:44 of the period to pull the Hawks within at intermission.

Hartwick (1-1) tied the contest on a goal by Wilk just 1:50 into the third period before the Golden Bears scored three straight times on a pair of goals by Cherry and one by senior midfielder Zack Sondrini (Pittsfield, MA) to take a 6-3 lead heading into the final quarter.

The Hawks rallied using goals by Austin, McCormack, and junior attacker Dan Hushion (Farmingdale, NY) (with 4:26 left) to send the game into overtime.

Junior goalie Chris Body (Newtown, CT) finished with 13 saves (including one key stop in the final seconds of regulation) in a strong performance for the Golden Bears. Junior John Meade (Ocean Beach, NY) played only the second half, but was outstanding making 11 saves to keep the Hawks in the game.

Senior midfielder Brian Praetorius (Saugerties, NY) and junior midfielder Ben Reardon (Longmeadow, MA) each had an assist for the Golden Bears.
