NORTON, Mass. – Chalk one up for the record books.
The No. 3 Western New England College men's lacrosse team completed the first perfect regular season in the program's 26-year history with a 19-5 victory over host Wheaton College game Saturday afternoon (April 28).
The Golden Bears (14-0) also tied the school record for wins and clinched its second consecutive Pilgrim League title with a perfect 8-0 mark.
Senior Adam Cherry (Westfield, MA), junior Bryan Cofrin (Londonderry, NH), and sophomore Scott Kukis (Sudbury, MA) each scored three goals to lead the way. Cofrin also dished out two assists while Cherry and Kukis each added an assist.
Senior Zack Sondrini (Pittsfield, MA), junior Ben Reardon (Longmeadow, MA), and sophomore Chuck Cartelli (Yorktown Heights, NY) all contributed a pair of goals. Senior Ryan LaChance (Brunswick, ME) and junior Travis Brown (Montpelier, VT) both had a goal and assist.
Wheaton stayed close early trailing only 2-1 after the opening quarter before WNEC netted seven goals for a 9-1 lead at the break. The Golden Bears outscored the Lyons 7-2 in the third stanza for a commanding 16-3 advantage.
Freshman Tim Horan led Wheaton (4-10, 4-4 Pilgrim) with two goals while senior Trey Helms and junior Richie Rasamny each had a goal and assist.
Western New England College will host a semifinal round game of the Pilgrim League Tournament at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday (May 2) against an opponent to be determined.
