HARWICH, Mass. – Sixth-seeded Western New England College scored seven runs in the top of the seventh inning for a come-from-behind 10-5 victory over third-seeded Williams College Wednesday afternoon (May 16) in a first round game of the NCAA Division III New England Regional Baseball Tournament at Whitehouse Field.
Junior designated player Travis Schwamb (West Springfield, MA) knocked in the go-ahead run with a double to left center after senior third baseman Josh Jacobs (Essex Junction, VT) tied the contest with a two-run double in the preceding at-bat.
Junior shortstop Ryan Kravontka (Glastonbury, CTY) followed Schwamb's hit with a two-run triple to help the Golden Bears erase a 5-2 deficit.
Williams led 4-0 after three innings before senior first baseman Tom Horgan (Westfield, MA) put WNEC on the board with a two-run single in the fourth.
Sophomore left fielder Mike Beck (Whitesboro, NY) went 4-for-4 for the Golden Bears.
Senior pitcher Eric Smolin (Westford, MA) settled down after a shaky start and went six innings in raising his record to 8-1. Sophomore Jason Pizzoferrato (Windsor, CT) allowed only two hits over the last three innings.
Each team had14 hits in the game, but one difference was that Western New England College came through with four two-out RBI. Williams, meanwhile, went just 3-for-14 with runners in scoring position.
Junior right fielder Max Pinto and sophomore designated hitter Taylor Mikell each had three hits for the Ephs. Pinto also scored three runs. Senior shortstop Paul Morgan added two hits and a pair of RBI. Freshman Paul Burgdorf took the loss in relief for the Ephs (25-9).
Western New England College (28-10) will play a second round game against Eastern Connecticut (a 10-2 winner over St. Joseph's, Maine) at 1:00 p.m. Thursday (May 17).
