FRAMINGHAM, Mass. - The Western New England College men's hockey team showed a lot of heart on Valentine's Day after posting a 4-3 men's hockey victory over Framingham State Thursday night (Feb. 14). The win gave the Golden Bears a 6-1-1 mark in their last eight games and kept their ECAC Northeast playoff hopes still alive.
Junior forward Phil Lamy (Manchester, NH) scored twice, including the game-winner at the 7:06 mark of the third period, as WNEC raised its overall record to 6-13-2 and 4-6-2 in the conference with four games remaining in the regular season.
Junior defenseman Joe Balog (Ludlow, MA) gave the Golden Bears a 1-0 lead with a power play goal at 11:56 of the opening period before the Rams tied the contest on a goal by sophomore forward Joseph Mulvey (Marlboro, MA) at 15:20.
Lamy put Western New England College ahead 2-1 just 1:20 into the second stanza with another power play score before Framingham State again tied the contest at 15:55 on a goal by freshman forward John Sheehan (Stoughton, MA).
The Golden Bears tallied a pair of goals in a 1:52 span in the third period when junior forward Mike Majesty (Chicago, IL) netted an unassisted goal at 5:14 followed by Lamy's second goal of the evening at 7:06.
The Rams cut the margin to one when sophomore forward Jeremy Schmidt (Huffman, TX) fired home a goal at 8:32, but that was the final goal of the evening.
Junior forward Hank Levin (Lido Beach, NY) contributed two assists, including one on Lamy's game-winning shot. Balog also earned an assist on the play. Majesty (who has a team high 12 points) and freshman defenseman Alex Gorczyca (Columbus, IN) assisted on Balog's goal that opened the scoring. Sophomore defenseman Joe Trimboli (Las Vegas, NV) also had an assist in the game.
Freshman goalie Justin Richards (Somers, CT) finished with 16 saves, including seven in the final period. Sophomore Peter Dundovich (Philadelphia, PA) compiled 31 saves for the hosts.
Framingham (1-21-1, 0-13-1 ECAC Northeast) earlier took a 3-2 win over in overtime over WNEC back on December 4 in Springfield.
The four goals were a season high for Western New England College.
