Box Score DALLAS, Tex. - The Western New England College men's lacrosse team defeated Bowdoin 11-9 in a Division III contest of the Patriots' Cup Monday (March 16) at the St. Mark's School.
Senior Brody Savoie (Wilbraham, MA) led a balanced attack with three goals as seven players scored points.
Senior Scott Kukis (Sudbury, MA), junior Tim Santye (Skillman, NJ), and freshman Nick Jez (Somers, CT) each netted a pair of goals. For Jez, they were the first goals of his college career.
Freshman Patrick White (Milton, MA) contributed a goal and assist while sophomore Mike Santare (South Salem, MA) also found the back of the net. Junior Nick Zaleski (Somers, CT) chipped-in with an assist.
Freshman goalie Brewster Knowlton (Somers, CT) finished with seven saves. Savoie and senior Jared Pabis (Wilbraham, MA) each picked-up five ground balls.
It was a back and forth game as the Golden Bears scored the last three goals of the opening period for a 5-2 lead. The Polar Bears scored four unanswered goals to go ahead 6-5 in the second quarter before WNEC tallied three goals in the final 2:20 to take an 8-6 margin at the break.
After each team scored a goal in the third stanza, Western New England College scored the first two goals of the final period for an 11-7 lead and never looked back.
The Golden Bears raised their record to 2-1 following a second straight win over an opponent from the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC). WNEC defeated Bates 6-4 on March 12 in Lewiston, Maine.
Senior Rob Halliday (Sudbury, MA) and junior Adam Tracy (Providence, RI) each had a goal and assist for the Polar Bears who suffered their first loss in three outings. Sophomore Jake McCampbell (Medfield, MA) stopped 12 shots.
Earlier this afternoon, the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) ranked Bowdon 13th and Western New England College 15th in its weekly Division III poll.
The Patriots' Cup features some of the nation's top Division I and Division III, and high school programs.
Proceeds benefit the Wounded Warrior Foundation, a non-profit organization that assists men and women of our armed services who have been severely injured during the conflict in Iraq.
