Western New England College overpowers Salve Regina in conference contest

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Junior attacker player Tim Santye (Skillman, NJ) scored six goals and had an assist as the Western New England College men's lacrosse team defeated visiting Salve Regina 17-5 Wednesday afternoon (April 15) to remain unbeaten in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC).

The Golden Bears, ranked 13th nationally, are now 9-2 overall and 6-0 in the conference.

Santye had all of his goals in the first half, including four in the opening period as Western New England College took a 9-0 after the opening 15 minutes. The Golden Bears tallied six times in the second quarter to take a commanding 15-0 advantage at halftime.

Senior defender Brian Damboise (Milldale, CT) and senior attacker/midfielder Brody Savoie (Wilbraham, MA) each contributed a goal and two assists as 14 players scored points.

Damboise's goal was his first of the season and it came on a man-down situation with 53 seconds left before intermission. He also picked-up five ground balls as did senior defenseman Matt McAnneny (Wakefield, MA) and sophomore back-up goalie Ben Barlow (Newport, RI).

Seniors attacker player Scott Kukis (Sudbury, MA), junior midfielder Bill Greider (South Windsor, CT), and sophomore midfielder Chris D'Angelo (Suffield, CT) each chipped-in with a goal and assist.

Grieder also won 10-of-13 face-offs while freshman midfielder Tyler Tannock (Barrington, RI) was 5-for-8 in that category.

Freshman goalie Brewster Knowlton (Somers, CT) played the opening half and didn't allow any goals while stopping five shots in raising his record to 9-1.

Salve Regina finally broke into the scoring column with three goals in the third quarter.

Freshman attacker player Brendan Carroll (Garden City, NY) led the Seahawks with two goals and an assist. Junior attacker Ben Caron (East Longmeadow, MA), sophomore midfielder Sam Barnum (Holderness, NH) and sophomore attacker Evan Gates (Ridge, NJ) netted the other goals.

Freshman attacker player Chris Walker (Marshfield, MA) finished with a pair of assists. Junior defender Nolan McGarrity (Verona, NJ) picked-up a game-high nine ground balls.

Salve Regina falls to 9-3 overall and 5-2 in the league after suffering its second straight loss. The Seahawks dropped a 9-8 overtime decision to Roger Williams last Thursday, which snapped their eight-game winning streak.
