SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Sophomore pitcher Sean Keane (Brockton, MA) tossed a rare 10-hit shutout as the Westfield State baseball team blanked host Western New England College 4-0 in a non-league game Thursday afternoon (April 23) at Trelease Park.
Keane, a right-hander, struck out two and walked six in raising his record to 2-0 with his first shutout of the season.
Westfield State compiled 11 hits with junior first baseman Ben Campbell (Easthampton, MA) leading the way with a single, RBI double, and a run scored. Every starter hit safely in the game.
The Owls took a 1-0 lead in the second on a RBI single by sophomore left-fielder Sean Geary (South Yarmouth, MA) and extended their lead with three runs in the fifth.
Keane pitched out of several jams and the Owls' defense turned three double plays in the game.
It was a frustrating day for the Golden Bears who stranded 11 runners on base while committing two errors and having two players caught stealing.
Sophomore third baseman Tony Trubia (Tolland, MA) had three hits while senior center fielder Chris Newell (Wallingford, CT) had a single and double, and senior left fielder Mike Beck (Whitesboro, NY) a pair of singles.
Senior Bryan Calzone (Bethel, CT) (6-3) took the loss.
Westfield State (18-13) has won four of its last five contests while WNEC (23-14) has dropped its last two outings.
The Owls visit Massachusetts Maritime in a Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference twin bill on Saturday.
