No. 12 Western New England College upends Springfield in battle of city rivals

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Junior Tim Santye (Skillman, NJ) had a six-point performance with four goals and two assists as the Western New England College men's lacrosse team upended city rival Springfield 13-6 in a non-league game before an enthusiastic crowd of 1550 fans Friday afternoon (April 24).

Senior Brody Savoie (Wilbraham, MA) added two goals and three assists for the 12th-ranked Golden Bears are now 12-2 following their sixth consecutive victory.

WNEC took a 2-0 lead in the opening quarter on goals by sophomore Colin Houlihan (Yorktown Heights, NY) and freshman Nick Jez (Somers, CT).

Junior Kyle Gable (Somers, CT) put Springfield on the board at the 1:07 mark and the Pride took a 3-2 lead on two straight goals by senior Ryan Thibodeau (Somers, CT) with 9:59 left in the second stanza

Western New England College dominated the game after that scoring nine consecutive times, including five straight goals to end the half, including three by Santye and the first of the season by sophomore Sean Johnston (New Hope, PA).

Jez finished with two goals and an assist while senior Scott Kukis (Sudbury, MA) also netted a pair of goals. Kukis received credit for the game-winner, his fifth of the season. Freshman Patrick White (Milton, MA) chipped-in with a goal and assist.

Junior Bill Greider (South Windsor, CT) picked-up eight ground balls while senior Jared Pabis (Wilbraham, MA) had five.

Freshman goalie Brewster Knowlton (Somers, CT) compiled 10 saves for the Golden Bears while senior Tom Albano (Ridgewood, NJ) stopped 13 shots for the Pride.

Sophomore Shawn Runyon (Fairport, NY) contributed a goal and assist for the visitors.

Western New England College had a 44-35 advantage in shots, including a 27-13 edge in the opening half.

Seven players from Somers, Connecticut participated in the game.

Jez, Knowlton, and junior Nick Zaleski competed for WNEC while Thibodeau, fellow seniors Chris Jez, Steve Roland, and Gable performed for the Pride.

The Western New England College Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) will present proceeds from tickets sold at today's game to the Make-A-Wish Foundation
