SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Eleven players scored goals as the Western New England College men's lacrosse team coasted past Wentworth Institute of Technology 21-4 Saturday afternoon (Mar. 27).
The Golden Bears upped their record to 5-3 and stayed perfect in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) with a 4-0 mark.
Freshman attacker
Corrigan Harreys (Deep River, CT) led the way with four goals while sophomore midfielder
Billy Mason (Southborough, MA) had three goals and two assists.
Junior midfielders
Marty O'Brien (West Springfield, MA) and
Mike Santare (South Salem, NY) contributed three goals and an assist, and a goal and three assists, respectively.
Junior attacker
Joe O'Keefe (Branford, CT) chipped-in with two goals and an assist. Senior attacker
Tim Santye (Skillman, NJ) and freshman midfielder
Corey Johnson (Maybrook, NY) each scored twice. Junior midfielder
Anthony Monfredo (West Islip, NY) had a pair of assists.
Sophomore midfielder
Joe Martin (Springfield, MA) tallied his first career goal and won 7-of-11 face-offs. He also picked-up six ground balls while freshman defender
Stephen Louro (Nissequoque, NY) had five.
Sophomore goalie
Brewster Knowlton (Somers, CT) compiled six saves in three periods of work. Junior
Brian Hanno (Lowville, NY) and sophomore Jake
Luchuk (Clinton, CT) also saw action.
Wentworth took a 1-0 lead when freshman attacker
Mark Pappas (Worcester, MA) found the back of the net just 2:47 into the contest.
The Golden Bears scored the next eight goals to take an 8-1 advantage at halftime and the first four goals of the third period to open up a comfortable 12-1 lead.
Pappas finished with two goals while junior attacker
Matt Cox (Granger, IN) and freshman attacker
Connor Swanson (Holden, MA) had the other goals. Senior defender Jeff Ryan (Shrewsbury, MA) compiled a game-high seven ground balls.
The Leopards also used three goalies with senior starter
Mike Tobin (Silver Spring, MD) making four saves in 29 minutes, 33 seconds. Freshman
Jared Proulx (Nashua, NH) stopped six shots in 22:27 while classmate
Alex Matses (North Andover, MA) turned away three shots in the final eight minutes.
Wentworth is now 2-3 overall and 1-2 in the conference.
