BEVERLY, Mass. - Junior attacker Jack Curtis (Chelmsford, MA) scored the game-winner with 3:17 remaining as the Endicott men's lacrosse team handed Western New England College its first regular season loss in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) in two years with a 9-8 victory Saturday afternoon (Apr. 3).
The Gulls raised their record to 5-4 overall and 4-1 in the conference while the Golden Bears dropped to 6-4 overall and 5-1 in the league.
WNEC entered the game with a 16-game regular season win streak in conference play. Endicott was the last team to defeat the Golden Bears (8-7 in double overtime) in 2008.
This was another exciting match-up between two of the top teams in the regions.
EC led 2-0 after the opening period and 4-3 at halftime before sophomore midfielder Patrick White (Milton, MA) scored two goals in the opening 2:06 of the third period to give the Golden Bears their first lead at 5-4.
Junior midfielder Kyle Jordan (Falmouth, ME) netted the second of his two goals to tie the contest at 5-5 with 9:03 left in the quarter.
Senior attacker Tim Santye (Skillman, NJ) put Western New England College ahead for the final time with 1:38 remaining.
Endicott scored the first three goals of the final quarter, including two by senior midfielder Jonathan Prentice (Chelmsford, MA), for an 8-6 advantage with 10:44 left.
White answered with two more goals, the last coming with 4:16 remaining, to tie the game for the fourth time.
Prentice and senior midfielder Brad Lipkvich (Madison, CT) each finished with three goals for Endicott while junior attacker Jack Curtis (Chelmsford, MA) added a goal and assist. Senior goalie Eric Hagerty (Sudbury, MA) made 10 saves
White led Western New England College with four goals while Santye and junior attacker Joe O'Keefe (Branford, CT) each contributed two goals and and assist. Sophomore attacker Andrew Mariani (East Brunswick, NJ) chipped-in with two assists. Sophomore midfielder J. Michael Nardella (Beverly, MA) also dished out an assist.
Sophomore goalie Brewster Knowlton (Somers, CT) compiled 13 saves. Senior defender Nick Zaleski (Somers, CT) had a game high seven ground balls.
