QUINCY, Mass. - The Western New England College baseball team split a twin bill with host Eastern Nazarene Tuesday (April 6) taking the opener 5-1 before drooping a 6-2 decision in the night cap.
The Golden Bears, who had a seven-game win streak ended, are now 16-5 overall and 7-3 in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC). The Lions are 101-2 and 3-7 in the conference.
In the first game, senior
Matt Rogers (Portsmouth, RI) tossed a complete game eight-hitter for his fourth win in five decisions. He struck out eight and walked only one.
Sophomore catcher
Tyler Issadore (Hingham, MA) went 3-for-3 with a RBI in his second start of the season.
Junior third baseman
Tony Trubia (Tolland, CT) added two hits and a RBI while freshman
Mike Rubino (Northford, CT) contributed a two-run single that helped key a four-run third inning.
ENC junior second baseman
Anthony Melendez (Yonkers, NY) had two hits and junior center fielder
Victor Torres (Bronx, NY) had a double.
In the second contest, senior
William/Joe Steinwedell (La Jolla, CA) went six innings giving up two runs with six hits, four strikeouts and seven walks for the Lions.
Senior designated hitter
Nate Leaser (Solano Beach, CA) went 3-for-3 while sophomore left fielder
Danny Rodriguez (Bronx, NY) had a double and solo homer. Torres knocked in two runs with a single in the fourth that gave the hosts a 4-1 advantage.
Western New England College had six hits, but stranded eight runners on base.
Griglun had another top outing with a double and homer while Trubia also collected a pair of hits.
Sophomore
Tom Bouvier (East Longmeadow, MA) took the loss in his first starting assignment of the season.
